“We pulled into the driveway, and my daughter began to cry. She said, ‘Mom, we don’t have a home anymore.’” Amber and her family are now staying at a Red Cross shelter after Hurricane Helene devastated their home. This is a stark reality for hundreds of people across the Southeast. Having survived three hurricanes in the past 15 months, Amber and her family were familiar with what to do — they went to a county evacuation shelter before the storm for their safety. After the storm passed and they were finally able to see the state of their home, one of the first calls Amber made was to the Red Cross to find a nearby shelter. “As soon as I pulled up to the shelter, it made me feel good," Amber said. "I thought to myself, 'This is safe, and I’m going to be OK.' “The volunteers have been really kind to me. They’ve given us everything we need, they’ve played with my kids, and they’ve treated us so well. I’m just really grateful to have a place like this right now when we need it.” Alongside partners, we’ve provided nearly 18,000 overnight shelter stays for those evacuating and seeking refuge after Hurricane Helene's landfall. This number will likely grow as more people are able to return to areas and see the state of their homes.
