1/5 A quick thread on the new encyclical after reading it. I was not expecting any strong statements in any particular direction and for the most part that is what we got. This is with the exception of the statement about the use on ai in warfare, which was a strong condemnation.

@wordgrammer Wait is being sharded not a normal conscious experience?

Maybe you all couldn’t tell the difference between normal conscious experience and a 5th dimensional entity sharding 1/300th of your consciousness across 300 brains before calling all_reduce but I would definitely notice

Hofstadter's 'I am a strange loop' basically goes on about lots of weird shit like this for a significant chunk of it

I find the idea of a future "permanent underclass" deeply disturbing. I think a more pro-human vision for trans-humanism would be a good thing. But this idea as a plausible future seems very entrenched.

I think everyone is conscious, including the models, except for me

@wordgrammer These aren’t weird conclusions if you assume brain simulation is possible anyways. Changing from a physical to a digital substrate will do that to you.

If you think that LLMs are conscious you must accept a lot of weird conclusions. Like: - we can clone conscious experience - we can reverse time in conscious experience - we can pause and resume conscious experience - we can distribute conscious experience in space
