Was it devised to rob authenticity, originality, and creativity from the very soul of the writer of fiction? Who will be the arbiter?  . Ultimately, it will not be a mortal man. It will be Artificial Intelligence. It sees all and knows all. It won’t be hiding behind a curtain like the Great Oz. It has the potential and cognitive ability to interface with all of what you think, say, and do. AI will reframe your life. . Writers and storytellers will lose original discernment of thought. Some will embrace it others will deny or defy its intrusion. All will be victimized by it. Crestline, California. A tiny mountain town, my mother Helen’s kitchen, and the smell of cookies, fudge, fruitcake—and one mysterious favorite I’m not going to tell you about just yet. . Every year she’d bring out her not-so-secret weapon: Karo syrup. It turned simple popcorn into magic: baseball-sized popcorn balls in red, green, and that beautiful natural gold with cashews tucked inside. . Years later, I was deep under the ocean on a submarine in the South Pacific, far from home for Christmas. We hadn’t had mail in weeks when a helicopter dropped several bulging mailbags onto our boat. When the Yeoman finally found me in the sonar room, he was grinning—he had a big box from Helen Jones, my mom. . Inside? Popcorn balls. Dozens of them. Red, green, and those cashew-studded beauties. Navy tradition says if you get food from home, you share it with the crew. I’ll admit, I didn’t want to. But I started walking the boat anyway, offering them to my shipmates. And then something unbelievable happened. One by one, every sailor said the same thing:   “I don’t like popcorn balls, but congratulations, Jones.” . So that Christmas, somewhere in the middle of the ocean, I got to keep every single one of my mom’s popcorn balls. I ate them slowly, one by one, after watch, stretching them out over a couple of months.  . That simple Karo syrup treat turned into one of the happiest Christmas memories of my life. .
