I got a new intro scene for levels in Summon the Commoners. I'm keeping up the theme of "No Theme".

Underrated Game Dev Superpower: Put a feedback survey inside your game. This kind of info is absolutely invaluable. Not only can I track how the game improves over time but it's giving me access to the hard reality of how players experience it. Here's the questions I include and why:

I've created a few color sets that apply the colors I want to specific components. Super useful!
Humanyoyo@Human_yo_yo

@OvidiuTepes Oh wow, is this color change done through a shader? Or are you manually editing the sprites in an external program? If it's a shader, then I'd say let the player choose! If not, then I seriously respect the work you have put in for the post!

@JuhaKiili @SamuraiPhonk Thank you, this is very helpful. It seems like a lot of people post videos where they say, "Make a video game", and it pops out a mediocre project. Hearing how you frame it makes so much more sense. Thanks for educating me!

The current tools give agents access to your entire project. After you prompt a task, they look for the relevant parts of the code. You can also point out which parts are important. They also tend to copy the style and structure of the existing codebase. In my project, for example, I implemented an entity-component system (similar to Unity’s) with a specific memory layout. Because that pattern already exists, the agents now follow the same approach when adding new systems or components with little guidance. The more explicit and opinionated you are, the more accurate and cheaper the results will be. If you ask for a large task with no instructions, the agents will burn many tokens for a somewhat random outcome. Sometimes you still get lucky and strike gold, but often the result is noisy and unreliable.

Day #30 of making a game It now has the full gameplay loop: building the city, feeding the villagers, arming them, and finally dying heroically against growing enemy swarms. If you want to try it out, join the Discord server. Link in the comments.

Very interesting- thanks for the thorough reply. I am super ignorant on this side of things- you said they can copy your style and structure, does that mean you go ahead and feed them your code base as a foundation for them? Like, for my project, I can give it a 100k line project and it will be able to emulate my coding style? My big problem in the past is that generative code doesn't match my coding style, but I assume that's just because I didn't give it all of my code?

For me, trust in LLMs came from early tinkering. I manually copy-pasted small chunks of code into LLMs and asked for simple refactors. Over time, I developed an intuition for prompts, context, and limitations. Modern agents are better at building context automatically, but I still feel that doing it manually at first helped me use them more effectively. I tend to ask less of them than they are capable of because I want to avoid risks. Agents are also good at copying the style and structure of your codebase. That is why it helps to set the foundations right so you can relax later. For this game, rendering and input are handled by Love2D, but I compile a custom multithreaded C library that handles all simulation and logic. I want to support a massive city, and I was worried that single-threaded Lua would not be able to handle it.

@_theMatteBlack Hey! Just ran into your game- it looks beautiful. Do you have any tips for marketing your game? I have so much respect for people who create games THEY want to make, and it makes me happy you have gotten 2k followers on Steam!

@Sindruid_ Something about the graphics here are SICK- is this the magic of shaders? Or is this just the skilled hand of an artist?

@JuhaKiili @SamuraiPhonk That's wild! Do you have any tips for a long time developer who is naturally skeptical of LLM generated code? What's the best way to use LLMs? Another side question- what engine/libraries are you using?
