🚨 BlackRock x Energy Web Most wanted partnership in crypto! This time their actions seem to be aligning with the adoption of SAFc Registry book-and-claim system. Let's unravel the history and ties between RMI, EDF, EWF, Shell, Deloitte and... BlackRock! 🧵👇 The Clean Skies for Tomorrow Initiative In 2021, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), launched the Clean Skies for Tomorrow (CST) initiative. This project aimed to establish an accounting system for Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates (SAFc). Notably, within the CST Workgroup were key contributors to the Energy Web ecosystem: EDF, founding member of the Energy Web Foundation (EWF) and still validator of the Energy Web Chain (EWC); Shell, also founding member of EWF and has been a validator in the past; and Deloitte, an early 2023 member and active validator on the Energy Web Chain. But among these names, one stood out: BlackRock! @wef @RockyMtnInst @CleanSkies4tmw @EnvDefenseFund @Shell @Deloitte @DeloitteUS @BlackRock BlackRock’s Role in Clean Skies for Tomorrow The inclusion of BlackRock in the CST Workgroup suggests an early and foundational involvement with the SAFc framework. Given the founding role of RMI in the Energy Web Foundation and EDF's later establishment as co-founder of the SAFc Registry, BlackRock's presence points to a deep-seated awareness of RMI's and Energy Web's objectives. Endorsement of Energy Web’s Green Solutions In 2022, BlackRock endorsed the work of RMI and Energy Web in the green technology sphere, specifically with regard to Green Proofs for Bitcoin (#GP4BTC). The endorsement referenced Energy Web's Medium article and later they included Energy Web in their Educational Academy as guest speaker. This indicates BlackRock's consciousness of Energy Web's broader Green Proofs solutions, including those for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as Energy Web talks about "electricity-intensive industries" and "clean commodities". Announcement of the SAFc Registry November 2022, RMI and Energy Web announced the SAFc Registry, later launched in 2023 at COP28. Though BlackRock's 2022 Sustainability Disclosure did not overtly mention SAF, their philanthropic support for Breakthrough Energy's Catalyst and the LanzaJet grant reflects a vested interest in sustainable fuel development. BlackRock’s Evolving Sustainability Strategy In their 2023 disclosures, BlackRock articulates a commitment to leverage lower carbon energies, specifically citing Sustainable Aviation Fuel as a key strategy. They acknowledge operational initiatives in SAF, indicating a strategic approach that encompasses, but is not limited to, SAF certificates. BlackRock's Exploration of SAFc The disclosure goes further to suggest that BlackRock is exploring the reduction of travel emissions through mechanisms such as SAF certificates via book-and-claim. This exploration is substantiated by their investment in a book-and-claim program, marking a tangible step towards operationalizing SAF as a decarbonization solution. Deloitte's Involvement and the Potential for SAFc Registry Usage With BlackRock engaging Deloitte to audit their GHG emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the potential for Deloitte to facilitate BlackRock’s use of the SAFc Registry becomes increasingly tangible. Deloitte's involvement with Clean Skies for Tomorrow and SABA, along with their role as an Energy Web member and validator, strengthens the likelihood of this connection. Conclusion: While Speculative, Indicators Point to Probable Use of SAFc Registry While official confirmation is pending, the facts present a compelling case for BlackRock's usage of the SAFc Registry. The firm's well-documented exploration and operational shifts toward SAF, combined with Deloitte's intertwined roles, indicate that BlackRock is not just aware of, but is actively moving towards adopting Energy Web’s solutions. This trajectory, while still unconfirmed, is far from speculative when viewed through the lens of factual developments and strategic alignments. Looking Forward As we await BlackRock’s GHG emissions report for 2023 and further developments from Energy Web events and on-chain data, the Energy Web community is poised to witness how these alignments might manifest into confirmed actions and partnerships. The evidence thus far strongly indicates that BlackRock is set to report on their SAFc purchases, showcasing the SAFc Registry's role as a leading decarbonization solution for aviation, potentially validating the close ties with Energy Web and its foundational technology. Special thanks to @GreenAltCrypto, @OrwellHuxley69, all the other Champions and Energy Web Community in keeping each other educated.
