I thought, "Aww, he knows I’m hungry." ​20 minutes later, Femi came back with a black nylon bag. The smell hit me first. Fried Rice and Turkey. That specific aroma that makes your mouth water instantly. ​I sat up on the bed, waiting for him to bring our spoons. Femi sat on his reading chair. He opened the pack. He took out one spoon. ​I watched him. He took the first scoop. Chew. Swallow. He took the second. He bit into the turkey. ​I was confused. I cleared my throat. "Baby? Is it only one pack?" ​Femi looked at me, with oil staining his lips, and said the sentence that rewired my brain: "Eyah, babe, sorry o. You are strong." ​He called me "Strong" for starving while he ate. ​I sat there, watching the man I was "sacrificing" for finish every grain of rice. He didn't offer me a spoonful. He didn't offer me the skin of the turkey. He finished it, drank water, and let out a satisfied "Ahhh." ​In that silence, while the smell of his food filled the room, something in me died. And something else was born. ​I realized that Poverty does not make you selfish, characterter does. If a man cannot break a piece of meat for you when he has little, he will not build a house for you when he has plenty. He will just build a bigger fence to keep you out. ​I stood up. My legs were shaking from hunger. I told him, "I'm going home." He said, "oya babe, see you tomorrow." I walked out into the rain. I cried all the way to my hostel. ​I soaked garri that night with tears in my eyes. ​But the next morning, I woke up different. That hunger turned into a demon inside me. It pushed me to study harder for my Engineering degree. It pushed me to build my brans. It pushed me to hustle like a mad woman. ​Because I swore an oath that day: "I will never again sit in a room where someone else is eating while I am begging." ​Today, things are different. Femi is still in the same spot, looking for "Understanding Girls." Last week, he DM'd me: "Big madam, cut soap for your boy na. Things are tight." ​Immediately I saw the message, I didn't reply. I stood up. I picked up my car keys. I drove to the fanciest restaurant in town. I ordered a massive plate of Special Fried Rice and a Turkey wing the size of a human head. I took a clear a picture of it, steaming hot. Then I sent it to him with this caption: ​"I just calculated the money in my account. It is enough to feed your entire lineage. But since you are managing, look at this picture and be full. You are strong."
