We particularly commend him for his thoughtful reference to the suffering of the people of Afghanistan and for acknowledging the injustice of depriving them of a celebration that has been observed for centuries. The ban on Nowruz by the Taliban is not only an assault on a cultural tradition but a broader attempt to erase a shared civilizational heritage that connects millions across the region. Across the Persianate world, stretching from Asia Minor to South Asia, Nowruz has long served as a unifying force, transcending borders and bringing together diverse peoples through a common cultural expression. It is encouraging to see Pakistan recognize and embrace this heritage, reaffirming its place within this wider historical and cultural continuum. As a major inheritor of the Perso Muslim legacy in the subcontinent, Pakistan is deeply familiar with the significance of Nowruz. Under the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire, the Persian New Year was celebrated with great grandeur for nineteen days and nights and stood as one of the most important festivals across the realm. At a time when our region faces profound challenges, such recognition of shared heritage offers an opportunity to build bridges, foster mutual respect, and work toward a future defined by peace, dignity, and cooperation.
