@FaithBorkowsky And the growth I’ve seen in the kids when I added indep reading time to our day, everything else stayed the same. Took me 3 years to pinpoint why my kids were growing so much more than years prior.

@FaithBorkowsky 4. Analyzing their in class reading logs, knowing what their level and words per min rate is will determine how much they should be able to read within a given time 5. Allowing sts time to talk with others about the reading work they did based on focus and listening in

@FaithBorkowsky I know from: 1. the groans I hear when indep reading time is over; 2. using an engagement survey at 3 different points of indep reading time and looking at the data over time for trends within students, 3. conferring with kids about what they’re reading frequently

A good read about explicitly stated learning goals and possible harm they can cause. "...they are a symptom of an industrialized model of teaching in which a feeling of certainty and security is often valued over curiosity." (@JSerravallo - it made me think of our debates 🤓)

Nice essay from an Australian teacher on why to stop posting learning goals/targets/outcomes on the board - a relic of behaviorism that ignores the key role of unpredictable (& also implicit) learning: is.gd/JPT5MY
