It's a Saharan dust storm. Strong southerly winds from the Sahara Desert have carried massive amounts of fine, iron-rich sand across the Mediterranean into Libya, Greece (including Crete), and nearby areas. The particles scatter shorter wavelengths of sunlight, turning the sky blood-red during the day.
A separate dust event from a cyclone caused similar skies in parts of Australia last week. These are natural, seasonal weather events—not anything unusual or ominous.
