🚨 Roads in England and Wales need urgent attention 🚨 A new report from the Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey report reveals that the one-off cost to repair England’s roads has hit a record £18.6bn. IAM RoadSmart is calling for: 🛣️ Long-term funding to focus on preventative maintenance and quality repairs 🕳️ A clear national standard for what counts as a pothole ⚠️ Better warnings for drivers and bikers about serious road defects Director of Policy and Standards Nicholas Lyes said: “The AIA’s report lays bare the crumbling state of our road network as well as the effort and money now required to fix it. Notwithstanding the financial headache pothole-related damage does to the vehicle’s owner, our crater-laden roads are posing a serious road safety hazard. In 2022 alone, nearly 500 collisions were caused by poor or defective surfaces, resulting in four fatalities. Recent IAM RoadSmart research shows that 82% of motorists have steered away or had to brake hard to try and avoid damage from a pothole in the last 12 months. This worrying finding suggests drivers are being forced to spend a great deal of their time focused on the spotting holes in the tarmac rather than monitoring all hazards around them.” asphaltuk.org/alarm-survey-p…

IAM RoadSmart in the news 📰 One in three Brits think SUVs are a greater threat to cyclists than smaller vehicles 🚴 New research from IAM RoadSmart found that 33% of UK motorists believe SUVs pose a bigger risk to cyclists, while 32% say they are more dangerous to pedestrians than smaller cars.
