we stopped being curious and started being correct.
the design conversation is trapped in a loop because we’ve confused access with depth. every space, every panel, every thread is just a louder version of the last one… same grievances, same five talking points, same people performing expertise for an audience that’s also performing engagement
designers love to talk about solving problems, but our discourse is obsessed with defending positions. should designers code? should we charge more? should clients respect the process? these aren’t conversations… they’re auditions. everyone already has their answer before they log in. the “discussion” is just finding validation in real time.
and the “work for free” conversation? it survives because it’s emotionally safe. it gives designers a clear villain, a righteous stance, and the comfort of community without demanding anything genuinely difficult in return. me personally? i want to see people talk about ownership models, equity, design led ventures, the economic architecture of creative work. make the argument irrelevant by changing the conditions that produce it.
beyond that? expand your view mehn… if every voice in your spaces sounds like yours, you’re not having a conversation. you’re hosting a mirror. the hard truth is that profound conversations require people willing to be wrong in public. and most design spaces are curated specifically to prevent that.
build rooms where the stakes are real, the positions are genuinely contested, and nobody leaves feeling confirmed. that’s when design discourse becomes worth having.
