@Jonathansegal85 Yes, whether article likely to get cited certainly 1 component of editorial decision. As you say, can be a crude measure of whether article “important”. But I disagree with suggestion that editors “easily manipulate”&”game” the IF eg by just bashing out couple extra guidelines

@IBD_MB Lastly, why as reviewers are we even asked if this article is likely to get cited? is it relevant? If a paper is to be accepted it should be on other merits + not because of citations. ( I agree some correlation) To me it suggests an importance to some editorial decisions

Impact factors are nice but are easily manipulated. It’s not necessarily a metric of quality but sometimes how well the editorial team play the game. Guidelines, reviews, editorials, letters and avoiding niche topics pump IF. A measure of quality is the science it publishes
