📉 Over €1.45 billion lost. 🚨 That’s what the Portuguese soft drink tax has cost our sector and Portugal’s economy. We can change this: it’s time to reconsider this tax, as has been called for by our Portuguese member association, PROBEB. 📚 An independent study by Porto Business School demonstrates that the soft drink tax in Portugal, introduced in 2017, has led to major structural losses, including: 🔻 €434 million in gross value added 🔻 €186 million in wages 🔻 €141 million in tax revenue 🔻 1,156 jobs ⚠️ This tax is reducing economic activity and costing jobs, undermining the soft drinks sector’s competitiveness and Portugal’s growth, without leading to tangible health improvements. Obesity rates in Portugal remain high: 15.7% in 2017 and 15.8% in 2022, according to Eurostat. 💬 Commenting on the study, Marcio Cruz, President of PROBEB, underlined: ‘𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴. This significantly exceeds the 10% reduction target in average sugar content that was set. 📽 Watch the video. ⬇️

The empirical evidence thus far on sugar-sweetened beverage taxes fails to support claims that these taxes will create substantial health benefits. At the same time, their structural limitations make them ill-suited for generating stable, equitable revenue. Explore the latest report from @AdamJHoffer and Jacob Macumber-Rosin: hubs.ly/Q046CLBY0

Guess which sector is the most innovative in the food and drink industry! 🙌 It’s our sector: the soft drinks sector. The new FoodDrinkEurope Data & Trends Report is out and, for another year, ranks the soft drinks sector as the top innovator in the food and drink industry. As a proactive and consumer-centric sector, we actively listen and respond to what consumers need, and we take our responsibility in supporting balanced diets and building a more sustainable future for Europeans. We can lead the way forward by investing significantly in innovation and this is what enables us to: ✅ meet evolving consumer needs and preferences by expanding beverage choices, especially with low-/no-sugar options 🌍 decarbonise our operations 🔄 advance circularity of our beverage packaging 💧protect our water resources and biodiversity To continue leading in innovation, our sector needs to operate within a regulatory environment that truly supports innovation. ➡️ The EU’s simplification efforts can help by removing outdated rules that hinder innovation. This is the case for the 30% energy reduction rule limiting the use of low-/no-calorie sweeteners. This rule, which has no technical or scientific justification, should be removed to enable the industry to make further progress in sugar reduction and develop new beverages with no/low sugar. 🔎 Check out the report 👉 fooddrinkeurope.eu/wp-content/upl…
