Behind Brazil’s luxury sportfishing industry are women whose labor often remains invisible. Bait gatherers spend long hours sustaining a multimillion-dollar economy yet earn only a fraction of its profits. A powerful reminder of the gendered inequalities within fisheries value chains. news.mongabay.com/2026/05/who-ar…

For many small-scale fishers, the promise of blue economy has not translated into justice or inclusion. Coastal communities are increasingly calling for 'blue justice' that centers livelihoods, rights, and meaningful participation in ocean governance. news.mongabay.com/2026/05/sour-o…

Women remain central to fisheries economies, yet their contributions continue to be undervalued. The story from Mexico is a reminder that inclusive fisheries governance must also mean closing gender gaps in recognition, support, and decision-making. mexicobusiness.news/agribusiness/n…

Small-scale fishers keep communities fed, yet many continue to survive on fragile and hard-won livelihoods. The story from Bloemhof Dam in South Africa is a reminder of the people behind every catch. dailymaverick.co.za/article/2026-0…

The ocean’s midwater ecosystems have long remained out of sight—and largely out of policy conversations. New research warning about industrial fishing impacts on midwater fish is a reminder that marine sustainability depends on protecting even the least visible parts of the ocean food web. phys.org/news/2026-05-i…

Indigenous Communities in Nepal's Makwanpur Face Challenges to Traditional Livelihoods A river flows near the house, but the Bote community of Makwanpur cannot cast nets. Amresh is next to the house, but the Vankarai cannot make and sell their traditional broom profession. Chepang community has Churei in dowry, but it does not bear fruit. These are the problems of the indigenous, marginalized, and endangered communities of Makwanpur, whose customary practices are linked to water and forests. english.ratopati.com/story/61180/en…

Togo’s Fishing Communities Struggle Amid Coastal Erosion and Resource Decline Along Togo's narrow Atlantic coastline, the sea is steadily advancing, swallowing land, infrastructure, and livelihoods. In some areas, erosion reaches up to 30 meters a year, driven by rising sea levels, disrupted sediment flows from ports and dams, and human activities like sand mining. The damage is not just environmental. It has real economic consequences, costing the country millions of dollars each year and affecting communities that depend heavily on coastal resources. At the same time, Togo struggles to meet its own fish demand, relying on imports to fill the gap, which adds further strain to the economy. devdiscourse.com/article/scienc…
