The decision to kill off his mom in the cartoon was lowkey a fire idea and made the character all the more endearing because of it, if we’re being real. Yeah yeah call the dead parent trope overused as much as you want, it’s used extremely well in the cartoon and adds layers to who Virgil is as a hero. In the comics, Virgil is a hero mostly for fun. He has no sense of actual obligation or purpose in being Static because his life is perfectly fine without it. It’s a hobby. In the cartoon however, his mom died trying to do her job and save someone during a shooting. It was an innately heroic act that would inform how Virgil would operate as Static. Plus it offers a ton of palpable family drama. It forces Virgil to confront how much he misses her, creates an awkward tension whenever his father tries to find new love, and places his sister in an almost motherly position where she’s super protective of him. It’s perfect.
