Rajesh Mediratta, MD & CEO, IGX, shared his address in the inaugural session at the Annual Gas Summit 2026 held at Le Méridien, New Delhi. He spoke on the role of energy and gas exchanges in mitigating energy costs and optimising contracts. He highlighted the growing complexity of global gas pricing, driven by multiple indices and ongoing disruptions. He emphasized that there is no single benchmark giving the best returns; diversified and flexible contracting is essential. Industries and CGD companies need to balance long-term, mid-term, and short-term contracts. Long-term contracts must have an optimum level of Take or Pay so as to allow the use of spot markets when they are cheaper. The remaining portfolio should be balanced with spot and mid-term sourcing to manage volatility. He also underlined the importance of flexible contract structures, including destination change, resale provisions, and optimised Take or Pay, supported by exchange-led markets. At the marketer and country level, diversification across geographies and benchmarks is the felt need post the West Asia crisis, even at the cost of some premium.
