What does it take to build conviction when investing in the future? At SINE & Y-Point, IIT Bombay, we believe that meaningful conversations are just as important as breakthrough technologies. They shape perspectives, challenge assumptions, and inspire the next generation of innovators. In the latest episode of SINE Voices, Saurabh Singh from Y-Point VC hosts Samir Kumar, Partner at Athera Venture Partners, IIT Bombay alumnus, and Board Member at SINE. Drawing from years of experience investing in and mentoring technology-led startups, Samir shares his perspectives on: * How venture capital firms build conviction in founders * Why technically brilliant deep-tech startups often struggle to scale * The role of institutions like IIT Bombay in shaping India's innovation ecosystem * Government, private capital, and the future of deeptech * Lessons from working with legendary entrepreneur and investor Kawal Rekhi * Founder psychology, AI, procurement, and what it takes to build globally competitive companies from India As India strengthens its position as a global innovation hub, conversations like these become increasingly important—not just for founders and investors, but for researchers, students, policymakers, and industry leaders working together to translate ideas into impact. We invite you to watch the full conversation and join the discussion. 🎥 Watch the episode here: ln.run/2xPyF #SINEVoices #IITBombay #SINE #DeepTech #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #VentureCapital #Startups #ResearchToImpact #IndiaInnovation

Twist in light enhances chiral discrimination Researchers from IIT Bombay led by Prof. Gopal Dixit, Department of Physics; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and IIT Hyderabad have developed a novel optical technique to distinguish between mirror-image molecules, known as enantiomers, using specially structured “twisted” laser light. Published in Science Advances, the study demonstrates that laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum interact differently with chiral molecules depending on their handedness. The researchers directed ultrashort twisted laser pulses onto gaseous samples of R- and S-camphor. The interaction ionized the molecules, causing them to fragment into charged particles that were analyzed using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. They observed that the number of fragments produced varied according to the combination of the molecule’s handedness and the light’s twist, enabling direct discrimination between enantiomers. Unlike conventional chirality-detection methods that require complex measurements, this approach relies on simple ion-counting signals, offering enhanced sensitivity and experimental simplicity. The technique could provide a powerful new tool for chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical analysis. As part of IIT Bombay's continued efforts to strengthen academic and research collaborations with Japan, Prof. Sudarshan Kumar Vatsyayan, Dean (International Relations) and Prof. P. Seshu, Professor-in-Charge of the IIT Bombay–Japan Collaboration Cell, along with members of the Office of International Relations, undertook an official visit to Japan from 11–15 May 2026. The visit focused on expanding IIT Bombay's engagement with leading Japanese universities and research organizations in light of the growing opportunities for student mobility, research partnerships, and fellowship programmes between the two countries. During the visit, the delegation engaged with senior representatives from Hokkaido University, Hiroshima University, and the Tokyo University of Science, while also holding discussions with officials from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the Embassy of India in Japan and the Hokkaido Government. The visit played a crucial role in enhancing awareness of IIT Bombay's academic strengths, identifying new avenues for collaboration and supporting the effective utilization of expanded fellowship opportunities, thereby fostering sustainable and long-term Indo-Japan partnerships in education and research. #IITBombay #JapanIndiaPartnership #InternationalRelations #GlobalEngagement #AcademicCollaboration #ResearchPartnerships #StudentMobility #IndoJapan #HigherEducation #GlobalPartnerships #Internationalization #HokkaidoUniversity #HiroshimaUniversity #TokyoUniversityOfScience #JST #EducationDiplomacy

IIT Bombay is proud to have taken sixteen of its deep-tech startups to Bharat Innovates 2026, the Ministry of Education's International Innovation Showcase in Nice, France, held as part of the India-France Year of Innovation. For three days, these sixteen teams stood shoulder to shoulder with the best of global innovation, exhibiting at their own stalls, meeting investors, industry partners and policymakers, and showcasing the excellence and impact that Indian deep-tech, built on our campus, are capable of. What makes this stand out is the sheer breadth: sixteen companies across seven frontier sectors, each taking on a hard, real-world problem. Aerospace & Defence: Bellatrix Aerospace, ideaForge and Manastu Space, building the propulsion systems, drones and space technologies of the future. Biotechnology: AmyScan Healthcare and Immuno Adoptive Cell Therapy, advancing diagnostics and next-generation cell therapy. Healthcare & MedTech: Ayati Devices, Haystack Analytics and Lifespark Technologies, taking earlier, smarter care to more people. Sustainability & Climate: Inphlox Water Systems, Torus Robotics, Trinano Technologies, UrjanovaC and VDT Pipeline Integrity Solutions, working across water, robotics, advanced materials, clean energy and critical infrastructure. Advanced Computing: QuNU Labs, securing the quantum era. Semiconductors: iMumbai Semiconductor, building India's own chip capability. Manufacturing 4.0: Atomberg Technologies, reimagining everyday products through energy-efficient design. Every one of these companies began with a question asked in a lab, a classroom or a hostel room at IIT Bombay. To watch them carry that question onto a global stage, and to be met there by the world, is exactly why an institution like ours exists. This is only the beginning of their journey, and of what India's deep-tech ecosystem will take to the world. #BharatInnovates2026 #IITBombay #MinistryOfEducation #MoEIndia #IndiaFrance #DeepTech #Innovation #Startups #MadeInIndia
