The beautiful city of Lyon 🇫🇷 is saying bienvenue - welcome! - to the world. From small island countries and areas to the most populous nations, all attending the global #OneHealth Summit - co-hosted by France and Indonesia 🇮🇩 - underscoring the crucial interconnectedness of human, animal and ecosystem health. The first of its kind, the high-level gathering brings together heads of state, ministers representing diverse portfolios, and multilateral institutions - including the One Health Quadripartite comprising of @WHO, he UN Food and Agriculture Organization @FAO, the UN Environment Programme @UNEP and the World Organisation for Animal Health @WOAH. A pleasure to witness the WHO Western Pacific Region well-represented here, and to begin the week by meeting Ministers of Health Dr Claude Gambey of New Caledonia and @BudiGSadikin of Indonesia. As well, Hung Nguyen-Viet, Asia Regional Director of the International Livestock Research Institute @ILRI - whom I unexpectedly ran into at the airport! New Caledonia - a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific - has long embraced One Health. Key actions include reducing #antimicrobial use in livestock including the territory's pork industry; managing climate-sensitive diseases including #dengue and #leptospirosis; and establishing regional research partnerships such as PREZODE One Health Action in the Pacific. Indonesia has customised the global One Health Joint Plan of Action (OHJPA), bringing together stakeholders from multiple ministries and a range of professional associations including ILRI. Indonesia's OHJPA's focus includes health systems strengthening through enhancing One Health; reducing risks of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic epidemics and pandemics; and controlling and eliminating endemic zoonotic, neglected tropical, and vector-borne diseases. For its part, ILRI has been involved in Indonesia's Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative, to balance food production with environmental sustainability; avian influenza control among backyard poultry systems; improving animal disease reporting and response; and strengthening mixed farming systems with livestock and crops. So, you see how it's all connected - humans, animals, the environment! Here is why this matters: 🐕 98% of human rabies cases in Kenya come from dog bites. 📉 70% vaccination coverage in dogs can stop the virus entirely. 🧼 15 mins of washing a bite wound with soap can save a life.
