It is deeply disappointing to see a UK government that pledged to remain committed to the European Convention on Human Rights now supporting efforts to weaken protections for refugees and migrants.
Because governments across Europe feel politically threatened by rising populism, they’re willing to attack the vital principles that rights apply to everyone at all times, no matter who we are.
Attempts to pressure courts into interpreting human rights protections in ways more politically convenient to Governments risk undermining respect for the rule of law.
Human rights protections exist precisely for moments like this, when fear, political pressure and scapegoating are at their height.
Weakening protections for some of the most vulnerable people in Europe will not reduce the need for people to seek safety or make societies fairer or safer.
It risks fuelling a damaging race to the bottom while handing victories to those who will never be satisfied until the UK leaves the Convention altogether.

Hundreds of children every month are being kept apart from their loved ones because of the Government’s suspension of refugee family reunion.
Last week, we were in the High Court challenging this — and we won’t stop. This cruel suspension must end NOW. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

We are deeply disappointed that the UK-France 'one in, one out' scheme has been extended until October. We stand by the concerns we and other groups shared earlier this year:

Really powerful first-hand piece from friend of IMIX @AlighaderiUK on his experience of taking both 'unsafe routes' and 'safe routes' to seek sanctuary. Such a strong argument for refugee family reunion & safe & legal routes for people in need of asylum
