I took my 4 year-old for a haircut the other day. His regular barber wasn’t around, so another guy in the shop offered to help, said he could handle it just fine. The moment my son saw him, his whole mood changed. He clung to me, shook his head, and made it very clear he wasn’t interested. Then came the pacing, the hiding behind my legs, the quiet resistance that people often mistake for “acting out.” I could feel the eyes in the room almost immediately. That unspoken expectation to just make him behave. The barber, trying to be helpful, suggested he could just pick him up and get it over with. I stopped him, gently but firmly. I told him to give me a few minutes instead. So I slowed things down. I started distracting my son, pulled up a short cartoon on my phone, let him hold onto my hand, even promised we’d call his cousin while we were there. He wanted all of it at once, of course. And still, he wouldn’t sit. But I knew this wasn’t stubbornness. He just wasn’t ready yet. At one point, the barber reached for him again, probably thinking he was helping.
