My mother taught me a prayer for protection when I was younger. I didn’t think much of it then. It was just one of those things Nigerian parents insist on, like greeting elders properly, or not whistling at night. Simple. Repetitive. Memorized. I stopped saying it as I got older. Until I moved out. That’s when I started using it again. Not out of faith. Out of habit. The first night I said it in my new place, nothing happened. The room was normal. Generator noise outside. Distant traffic. Everything ordinary enough to ignore. The second night, I noticed something small. My door wasn’t fully closed in the morning. I remember locking it. I checked twice before sleeping. Still, I told myself it was stress. Third night, I said the prayer again. Same words. Same rhythm. I’ve always said it quietly, almost under my breath. That night, just after I finished, I heard a soft sound outside my door. A pause. Then the handle moved once. Like someone was testing it. I sat up immediately. Silent. Listening. Nothing followed.

Anyone else notice that these days there are lots of satellites (moving stars) in the night sky??

Nigerians switched from using louvres, which provided full ventilation, to sliding windows, which provide only partial ventilation. Now, everyone is complaining of heat after blocking air from entering their rooms. Why are we so backward in everything we do?

I’ve done a lot of crazy things for love, but this one I’m about to share is by far the craziest. Not the social media type of love no noise, no competition just real plans, real sacrifices, real promises whispered at night when the world was quiet. When she got the admission to study in the UK, we both celebrated like it was our win. She cried on my chest that day, saying, “We made it.” I believed her. I didn’t have the money. Not even close. But I had faith in us. I sold my car. That car was my pride. My freedom. My daily hustle. I told myself it was temporary that when she settles, when she starts working, when we close the distance, we’ll build everything back together. I watched the buyer drive it away and told myself, “This is love.” I sponsored her ticket. Helped with accommodation. Sent money when she said things were tight. Stayed up late to match her time zone. Prayed for her in a country I had never seen. The first few weeks in the UK were sweet. Video calls. “I miss you.” “I can’t wait for you to join me.” Plans about our future there. Then the calls became shorter. She was “busy.” Always tired. Always out with “school people.” I ignored the small voice in my head. I told myself she was adjusting. New country. New environment. Of course it won’t be easy. But the good morning texts stopped. The late-night calls stopped. Even her voice changed. Cold. Distant. Like I was disturbing her peace. Two months. Just two months. One evening she called me. I knew something was wrong before she spoke. That heavy silence. That rehearsed tone. “I didn’t ask you to sell your car,” she said. “I didn’t force you to do all that.” My vision became blurry immediately. That was when I knew. There was someone else. Later I found out the truth she had already moved on. A guy there. Same school. Same city. Probably walking the same streets I used to imagine us walking together. The worst part wasn’t even the cheating. It was how easily she erased me. Like the sacrifices meant nothing. Like the nights I went home trekking after selling my car meant nothing. Like I was just a chapter she needed to close before starting her “real life.” I didn’t cry immediately. I just went numb. The anger came later. The questions came later. Was I not enough? Was I just a stepping stone? Did she ever love me, or was I just convenient? Since then, I haven’t been the same. I find myself doubting every smile. Every promise. Every “I love you.” I built walls I never had before. It’s not even about her anymore. It’s about how betrayal changes you. I gave my best with pure intentions. I moved from love to suspicion in two months. Sometimes I still think about the day I watched my car drive away. If I could go back, I don’t know if I would stop myself. Because at that time, it felt right. It felt like building a future. Now it just feels like I financed my own heartbreak. I don’t hate her. Not really. But she changed something inside me. And that’s the part I don’t know how to fix.

His Bolt car was found and his body some kilometers away in Moshongo, Attridgeville just outside Pretoria. The hijackers were a male and a female.
