St Andrews transformed my life. When I arrived in 1983 as a state-educated, first-in-family student, I found a place that combined demanding teaching with strong values, wide horizons and an exhilarating range of sport and student life. It shaped what I think education is for and I've stayed connected since through the academic community, mentoring students, and my role on the University Court. Over recent weeks, senior academics, members of Court and alumni across the generations have done me the honour of nominating me for Chancellor. If elected, I'll serve with energy and commitment - although whoever is chosen will have my wholehearted support. I'm standing because I believe the University is at a pivotal moment. Climate pressures, technological change, demographic shifts, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical instability will all affect how universities operate. St Andrews can be proud of its position today. The task now is to keep thriving as the world changes. I believe St Andrews should aim to be the finest university of its scale anywhere in the world. Two challenges stand out. The first is funding. UK higher education is on an unsustainable path. Government support will not keep pace with the ambitions of a university competing with institutions whose endowments dwarf ours. Under the Principal’s leadership, Making Waves has already achieved around half of its £300 million target. We need to go further and faster. The second is trust in knowledge itself. Universities are operating in an environment of noise and misinformation. Free speech and academic freedom are under pressure worldwide. St Andrews must protect serious enquiry and promote it with confidence and clarity. In that context, the Chancellor’s role matters. It's far more than ceremonial. The University is seeking a national figure able to play an important ambassadorial role. The next Chancellor needs to strengthen the bonds between alumni and the University, support fundraising and long-term partnerships, and be a serious voice for academic freedom and free enquiry. For much of my career I have worked on strengthening institutions through turbulent change, in government as National Security Adviser and Head of the Civil Service, and now across business and philanthropy. I have built relationships and opened doors in the UK and overseas. As a cross-bench peer, I can work with governments of any political complexion. If elected, I would be an active Chancellor. I would represent St Andrews credibly at home and overseas. I would make the case that this remarkable university is a strategic national asset. I would use my networks to support fundraising and re-energise the Chancellor’s Circle. I would be a helping hand to students in an ever-changing and complex world. Voting will be open from 16 to 22 February, and I hope every eligible member of General Council will take part. This election matters to the future of St Andrews. I am ready to serve.
