Sources in eastern Kunar have confirmed to the BBC that Pakistani jets and drones targeted Kunar University & its hostel. At least three students and one professor were wounded. A professor who was lecturing at the time told me he heard terrifying explosions across the Uni campus

Some personal news :) I’ve been appointed Managing Editor of Radio Azadi. Not that it’s based on gender, but this is the first time Azadi is led by a woman. At a critical time for @RFERL and media freedom, I look forward to serving our audiences alongside my talented colleagues.

The President of the United States is threatening to commit war crimes and wipe out a "whole civilization" — all because he started a disastrous war of his own making and had no plan and no strategy for how to end it. This is abhorrent, and the American people do not support this. Trump's recklessness is needlessly putting our brave service members in harm's way, destroying America's global standing, and making life even more unaffordable for the American people. We must all stand against this and oppose funding this illegal war of choice.

◾️The Pakistani airstrikes on a Kabul drug rehabilitation center last month were the deadliest attack on civilians in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over in 2021. ◾️The United Nations’ mission in Afghanistan has so far confirmed 269 civilian deaths, 122 injured, and says the death toll is likely higher. Taliban officials say more than 400 people were killed, which international humanitarian organizations operating in Afghanistan say is credible. ◾️Our reporting suggests that Pakistan missed its target. The real target was less than 300 yards away behind a blast wall and housed drone parts. It appears to be intact. ◾️Since early 2023, the Taliban have rounded up thousands of drug users and placed them in facilities at times tucked in military compounds, where they face unmedicated, forced withdrawal in conditions that foreign officials have described as arbitrary detention. ◾️Two days before the strike on the Kabul center, Pakistan hit an empty military building adjacent to a drug rehabilitation center in the southern province of Kandahar. No civilian casualties were reported. ◾️Pakistani military officials have suggested that the patients in Kabul were being trained to become suicide bombers. They have provided no evidence to back that claim. ◾️The strikes abruptly ended the lives of husbands, brothers and sons who struggled with depression, grief or the shame of unemployment, their families said. Many said their relatives had ebbed for years between erratic behaviors, domestic violence and glimmers of hope shattered by relapses. Free link to our story below

#Historical_Notes📖 At that time, Waziristan was part of Afghanistan. Malik Angoor Khan, a Waziristani tribal leader, held a first-class (most prestigious political) royal passport in 1954. The late Haji Angoor Khan and his family were among the anti-British Waziristani figures during the Third Anglo-Afghan War, and Waziristan’s Angoor Adda is named after him. He belonged to the Baramel tribe and the Yargul Khel of the Wazirs and was the leader of the tribal militia. During the reign of the late Nadir Khan, he was granted a monthly salary of 4,000 Afghanis and leadership over the civil division. Mohammad Zahir Khan sent all these tribal leaders on Hajj at his own expense. The late Angoor Khan passed away in 1957 at the age of 71 and was buried in Waziristan. The following information about him is recorded on his passport I have: •Father’s Name: Nazim Khan •Nationality: Afghan •Rank: Civil division leader, militia •Place: Waziristan •Destination: Arabia •Purpose of Travel: Hajj, by airplane This passport is written in French and Pashto. Due to the deep ties between the people of Waziristan and Afghanistan, neither British India nor later Pakistan were ever able to take control of Waziristan.

@iNaseemShah Dear Naseem bro, remember: Afghanistan may face challenges, but one thing is clear, for many Pashtuns in KPK, it remains their true homeland. No matter how strongly you identify as Pakistani, your dignity and respect will always feel protected in Afghanistan.

Several civilians including children, were killed and injured as a result of Pakistani shelling in Asadabad of Kunar late today. Despite the “temporary” ceasefire, Pakistani forces continue to carry out shelling in multiple areas across Kunar and Nuristan.

For the second time, more than 50 additional bodies from the rehabilitation centre bombing most of whom were unrecognisable—were buried in mass graves. The victims were the most vulnerable people who had been brought to the centre for treatment in the hope for better future.

A Pakistani airstrike on a drug treatment center in Afghanistan on March 16 was an unlawful attack and a possible war crime. Pakistani authorities should investigate the incident and hold all those responsible for wrongdoing to account. hrw.org/news/2026/03/2…

Peshawar got the title of “city of flowers” when it was the winter capital of the Durrani kings. In 1809 when British emissary Mountstuart Elphinstone came out of Balahissar fort after meeting Afghan King Shah Shuja, he saw flowers all around and he mentioned it in his book.

🇦🇫🇮🇷 We just returned from the Afghanistan-Iran border to document the escalating impact of the war in Iran on the region. The human cost: - Afghan students forced to abandon degrees at Iranian universities. - Workers fleeing on crutches after being injured by airstrike shrapnel. - Families still coughing from the smoke of burning oil in Tehran. The numbers: - More than 70,000 people crossed into Afghanistan in the first two weeks of March. - The current pace (1,500–2,000/day) is lower than last year’s mass expulsions of 2M+ Afghans, but Iranian officials have warned humanitarian groups to brace for a massive surge. - Afghanistan has received the largest influx of people from Iran since the war began.  Afghans are fleeing one conflict only to risk being caught in another between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Iran has been Afghanistan’s primary trade partner since Pakistan closed its border last year, but the war in Iran is disrupting that partnership. Goods come and go through the border but the hawala systems have collapsed due to internet restrictions in Iran. More in our story — 🎁 link below.
