When you break down the ROI on male attention, you'll realise it's not even that serious. - 90% of those who approach you don't mean you well. Straight up. - Half of the remaining 10% are nothing to write home about. - The remaining 5% may be worth spending your time with, but from spending time with that 5%, you'll realise half of them are not what they initially present as. Not a parent, but I do feel like I've watched one example of this in real time working in childcare: -Child struggles with something -Parent immediately swoops in and helps, despite the kid not even asking for help -Next time the kid doesn't struggle as long, and just looks to the parent to fix it This often happens with things kids SHOULD struggle through (holding chalk, getting dolls' clothes on, building blocks) that kids need to learn for developmental reasons It feeds the parent's ego because they get to save the day, but over time the kid learns not to even try to solve their own problems, and that their success is someone else's responsibility The parents who tell their kids "You don't need me, you've got this" end up with the grittier kids

I went to secondary school in Barkin Ladi 20 years ago. This is what SS1 - 3 boys were doing, night shifts in the blistering cold. I did it too. My mates in Oyo were sleeping or studying. I’ve watched this shit deteriorate in real time. Barkin Ladi now looks nothing like it did when I graduated 14 years ago. I went to the same junction we used to buy stuff during outings last year & I was shaking. They don’t speak the same language. Crisis after crisis. Slowly, the people who used to till those lands are now doing menial jobs in the south. The names of the villages have changed. The senator representing that region was killed few days after I graduated when he attended a mass funeral of people who were massacred by the Fulanis who now occupy their homes. 14 years ago guys. Trying to raise awareness about this state-backed conquest feels like screaming under water. Few months ago, my aunt in mangu came to ask for money to trade cause she can’t farm anymore. Their farms were attacked 3 years ago. They wouldn’t dare go back. For more than 10 years, we’ve had internally displaced persons from Borno living in our house, after my mother took them in. They only go back to their so-called homes for funerals. 3 brilliant kids; Elizabeth, Margaret and Grace (named after my now late mother for her benevolence). The dad does security work, the mom cleans. Who knows what they could’ve made of themselves back home? I do, they’d have been compost for aliens. In 1998, I was fired from my corporate job while 9 months pregnant because and I quote, “my priorities would be elsewhere after the baby is born.” The lawyer I hired told me I didn’t have a case because discrimination like “that” was almost impossible to prove. So I got pissed. Took the LSAT. Went to law school. Passed the bar. Had 3 more kids. Twelve years later, another woman from that same company was fired for the same reason.
