Weird they were drafting stuff that was more explicitly gay if nobody wanted it to be gay at all, no? I believe Anno when he said he wanted it to be ambiguous, to support a multitude of interpretations, because there's evidence of that in the show. I don't believe him when he says there's no homosexual connotations at all because that's simply not describing the show (and wider media) as it actually exists. Like, honest question, have you read the manga?

Have you just never heard of "death of the author" or something? Also, a director has a lot of creative control over a series, but they are not the only person involved in the creation of the show. It's also notable that Anno's "clarifying" remarks come decades after, during a period of heavy revision of his own work. I simply don't think he really gets to singularly define what his work "means" years after the fact. Just like if he tried telling me Misato and Ritsuko are secretly gay or something, I'd simply ignore that because I don't see it in the work itself.

1) I don't think Anno is a singular authoritative source on what the significance of Eva is. The Barthes thing, y'know? 2) even if they didn't want to fuck, that doesn't mean they couldn't feel love for one another 3) the manga and extended works of Eva has featured the idea of them being romantically involved for decades. Anime-only hetero copers out themselves as fake fans by being unaware of this.
