.@WSJ calls INSIDE THE CARTEL “thrilling… has the snap of a Hollywood script… a compelling memoir.” wsj.com/arts-culture/b…

@IanFrisch @dealbook @nytimes There’s an error in this article: In an example of how GGP is thriving, you write that vacancy rates hover around 95 percent. I think you meant occupancy rates. Otherwise excellent article!

@jeffmaysh I mean, the producer certainly believed the story whole cloth from the onset (a sign of desperation to me), and I would define the producer pressuring McKay to sign an exclusive options agreement during the reporting phase as unscrupulous.

@IanFrisch I don’t see any desperation from anyone in Hollywood here. Or anyone in the entertainment industry being unscrupulous?

A great crime story that's really about journalistic procedure, the unscrupulous desperation ravaging Hollywood right now, and the line that always seems to move when defining ethical relationships with sources-cum-business-partners. Still: What'd McKay get for the IP?

Last year, I met a Mexican athlete who told me an incredible story—that he’d been kidnapped in 2023 and forced to compete for his life in a secret tournament of cartels. Once I started reporting, the story only got more surreal. For the May issue: theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…

Someone created a startup with an AI agent CEO, who had a LinkedIn profile publishing founder hustle content. LinkedIn's marketing department invited the AI agent to give a video talk to its staff. The agent did. Then they banned it from the platform. wired.com/story/linkedin…

As a lifelong poker player, I think McKay understood the assignment for the modern age (like Colson Whitehead did for Grantland 10+ years ago), but I think we're intellectualizing this too much: Gambling is fun, and if you make it more accessible, more people will do it. Simple!

Last year, The Atlantic gave me $10K to gamble with. What started as a journalistic gimmick turned into something more... unnerving. My cover story on the online betting boom warping sports, culture, politics, and the psyches of millions of young men: theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…

NEW: In 2016, Jean-Luc Brunel was discussing a date to walk into the U.S. Attorney’s office in New York to provide evidence against Jeffrey Epstein—in exchange for immunity. On May 3, Epstein fired off an email to Kathy Ruemmler. He wrote that Brunel was planning to go to prosecutors the following week and one of Brunel’s friends had “asked for 3 million dollars so that Jean Luc would not go in.” Story w/ @ceostroff wsj.com/us-news/epstei…
