That was not a joke. It was sexual innuendo directed at a 15 year old girl by Karen Nyamu, a sitting Senator of the Republic of Kenya, and a mother of daughters herself. What makes it even more disturbing is the lack of remorse. The apology was clearly reluctant and only came after sustained pressure from fellow Senators and public outrage. But she kept protesting even as she read it. Such remarks have no place anywhere, let alone on the floor of the Senate. It is deeply unfortunate that this came from someone seeking to represent the women of Nairobi in a leadership position where she would be expected to champion the rights, dignity and protection of women and vulnerable girls. Public office demands responsibility, maturity and appreciation of the influence leaders hold in society. The Senate from its origins in Ancient Rome was conceived as a chamber of statesmanship, wisdom and dignity. A house where those entrusted with public responsibility would rise above vulgarity and uphold the moral seriousness of leadership.
