July 25, 2024 Legends Baseball Wins ACBL Wolff Championship Game! Last night, the Essex Legends triumphed over their rivals, the Bergen Metros, in a thrilling game at Weequahic Park in Newark, securing a 3-2 victory. Pitching and defense win games, and last night was a perfect example of this winning formula. Legends’ starting pitcher Jake Depetris from Lake Hiawatha, NJ (Ramapo) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing only 2 runs while striking out 4 batters, posting a playoff ERA of 2.70, below his regular season ERA of 2.89, to earn the win. Jack Chavez from Westfield, NJ (Villanova commit) came on in relief, striking out 5 batters over 2.1 innings to earn the save. Ian Kaiser from Montville, NJ (Binghamton) continued his hot hitting, supplying the winning RBI by plating Ty Fredo from Caldwell, NJ (Mt. Saint Mary) with the go-ahead and winning run. Kaiser is hitting an outstanding .571 in this season’s playoff run. The Legends now head to Long Island to play the NYC Crush for the 2024 ACBL Championship. July 23, 2024 Legends Baseball Triumphs Over Matrix in a Thrilling Game Last night, the Essex Legends clinched their first-round playoff victory in a closely contested game at Weequahic Park in Newark, defeating Matrix 3-2. The Legends’ flawless defense was highlighted by an incredible “Ken Griffey” over-the-shoulder catch by Ian Kaiser, Montville, NJ (Binghamton) in right field. This stellar defense supported dominant pitching performances by starter Jacob Ruiz, Jersey City, NJ (St. John's) and relievers Billy Mulholland, Montvale NJ, (Bryant) and Alex Hwang, NYC (Yale). The Legends boast the best defensive outfield in the league, with three “centerfielders” patrolling the outfield: Colin Feeney, Ridgewood NJ, (Ithica) and Thomas Burns, Morristown NJ, (WPI) along with Kaiser. Ruiz threw 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out 5. Mulholland followed with 3 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 4. Closer Hwang earned the save, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out 3. In total, the Legends’ pitching staff struck out 12 Matrix batters. Offensively, Kaiser led the Legends with 3 hits and drove in a crucial run. Burns and Ty Fredo, Caldwell NJ, (Mount St. Mary) contributed with deep sacrifice flies, with Fredo’s being the winning run! Next up for the Legends are the Bergen Metros, who defeated the Jersey Shore Stallions 6-0 in their first playoff game. The Metros feature dominant pitching and timely hitting and have beaten the Legends 5 times during the regular season. This game will determine the ACBL Wolff Championship, with the winner advancing to the ACBL Championship game on Saturday, July 27, in Long Island.
