Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) exists to make testing faster, more accessible and useful during emergencies or situations requiring rapid clinical decisions. However, many POCTs are PRIMARILY screening or preliminary tests and SHOULD NOT automatically be treated as definitive confirmatory tests.
When abnormal or critical results are obtained, established protocols usually REQUIRE FURTHER laboratory testing or confirmatory investigations before a final diagnosis is made.
While some POCT devices are designed for public self-testing, many are intended for trained healthcare personnel. REGARDLESS of who performs the test, abnormal findings should be REFERRED appropriately for proper laboratory evaluation and interpretation.
Anything outside established diagnostic protocols is POOR and UNETHICAL practice.
