Don't agree. ​Studying JEE Advanced level Physics and Maths insanely improves your cognitive skills. Building stuff early doesn't give you as big of an edge as a sharpened IQ can. JEE also instills discipline in a 16-17 year old. There is a reason why engineers perform so well in other competitive exams. ​Also, let's not forget that the majority of kids in India are underprivileged. They have to optimise for a top college to get a great environment, a solid peer group, and a diverse alumni base to increase their chances of ensuring upward economic mobility.

Why is everyone worried about rank vs percentile in JEE Main? The number of applicants is higher, which is why you need a higher percentile score to get a particular rank. ​Seats are not allotted based on your percentile, only your CRL matters. Cutoffs don't change drastically, barring a few exceptions. If you have a certain CRL, you'll get the majority of the seats that a student would've received in previous years at that same rank. It doesn't matter whether your percentile is 98.6 or 99.2. ​In my opinion, no matter how much the number of applicants increases, the number of serious aspirants doesn't change much. Below the 90th percentile, very few actually prepare seriously, consistently, and smartly.
