🔴ICOMOS endorses @UNESCO 's statement expressing alarm at the drone attack of 24 March 2026, striking the historic centre of Lviv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2023. The attack damaged key monuments, the Bernardine Monastery complex and its St. Andrew’s Church, within a dense urban fabric of hundreds of protected historic buildings. Cultural heritage across Ukraine has been affected since the beginning of the war; this attack represents a new and unacceptable threshold in the escalation of such damage. Targeting cultural heritage, whether directly or indiscriminately, may constitute a serious violation of international law and of the conventions protecting humanity’s shared heritage. ICOMOS continues to work closely with UNESCO and Ukrainian colleagues and remains committed to supporting all efforts to safeguard #Ukraine ’s cultural heritage.
UNESCO 🏛️ #Education #Sciences #Culture 🇺🇳@UNESCO

UNESCO is deeply alarmed by the 24 March strikes that hit a building in the area of Bernardine Monastery within the World Heritage property of ‘L’viv – the Ensemble of the Historic Centre’. @UNESCO recalls that cultural property is protected under the 1954 Hague Convention and the 1972 #WorldHeritage Convention. All parties must safeguard heritage and refrain from any acts harming cultural property. #UNESCO stands ready to support the authorities with assessments, protection measures and emergency assistance. unesco.org/en/articles/un…

ICOMOS Sudan marks 3 years in the ICOMOS Network Today we reflect on 3 years of ICOMOS Sudan’s existence. On 7 March 2023, ICOMOS Sudan was officially established as a National Committee, marking a major milestone in protecting and promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage. Since its establishment, our Sudanese colleagues have faced unprecedented challenges as a result of the ongoing conflict, witnessing damage, looting, and destruction affecting their cultural heritage and institutions. Despite these difficulties, they continue to work in unity and remain committed to safeguarding Sudan’s cultural heritage, whether in Sudan or elsewhere. ICOMOS stands in unwavering solidarity with ICOMOS Sudan, its members, and the people of Sudan. We honour their courage and commitment and reaffirm our shared dedication to preserving Sudan’s cultural heritage — a source of identity, resilience, and hope.

Yesterday, UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Ms. Alexandra Xanthaki, presented her latest report "Nature conservation and cultural rights", to which ICOMOS contributed through its working groups on rights-based approaches and indigenous heritage, and its International Scientific Committee on cultural landscapes. 📌ICOMOS' key takeaway: nature conservation only works when it respects cultural rights and centres Indigenous and local communities. From Australia's river-as-living-entity law to Norway's Sámi wind farm ruling, the message is clear: biodiversity and human rights must go hand in hand. ➡️Read ICOMOS' full contribution: buff.ly/m29Rvfm

Nature conservation must not trample cultural rights, Special Rapporteur @AlexXanthaki told the @UN Human Rights Council. “Time & time again, communities complain they have not taken part in decision-making on development projects impacting their cultural life," she told #HRC61.

🔴ICOMOS fully supports @UNESCO 's expression of concern regarding cultural heritage amid the escalating situation in the Middle East, and reiterates the urgent need to respect and uphold international conventions that safeguard this shared heritage. In this context, ICOMOS also stresses the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and ensuring the protection of civilians, including all those working to safeguard cultural heritage. ICOMOS has been contacting ICOMOS National Committees and colleagues across the affected countries to check on their personal safety and to gather information to monitor developments and impacts on cultural heritage.
UNESCO 🏛️ #Education #Sciences #Culture 🇺🇳@UNESCO

UNESCO expresses concern over the protection of cultural heritage sites amidst escalating violence in the Middle East. On Monday 2 march, the Golestan Palace in Tehran, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was reportedly damaged by debris and the shock wave following an airstrike to the Arag Square, located in the buffer zone of the site in the Iranian capital. UNESCO continues to closely monitor the situation of cultural heritage in the country and across the region, with a view to ensuring its protection. To that end, the Organization has communicated to all parties concerned the geographical coordinates of sites on the World Heritage List as well as those of national significance, to avoid any potential damage. UNESCO recalls that cultural property is protected under international law, notably the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, including its enhanced protection mechanism, as well as the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
