Thank you @BookRiot for speaking this word over the book. Divinely positioned as Nana would say for “times such as this.” No coincidences that it’s set to release on Harriett Tubman Day 2026 of course the name of our publisher is @AmistadBooks. bookriot.com/the-best-new-n…

Because attention is fracturing, listening is rare, & reading is still one of the few ways back to ourselves. SHUT UP & READ.

So this sweet woman writes to me over and over again saying, “Jeannine, if you ever want to use my house it’s open to you.” I couldnt understand this level of graciousness at first. I’m like well how much? Or what are the strings attached, because after the last few years I’ve learned, chile watch out for those strings, but she continued for months offering it, saying she felt the house wanted me to inhabit it. So one morning, I wake up out of my dreams and something clearly says, go see that house. I say it was Ms. Ida. So I call the lady with the house whom Ive never met and she says come on over the house has been waiting for you. Now on the flip side, I had applied for this writing gig that deep down I’m pretty sure I didn’t want, especially cause some of these institutions be ready to pick you dry for a couple dollars, but things in the book world are fickle so I applied and all in the interview they got a thousand million questions, but I ain’t get the gig. So I called Philly Walls up like yo, what stops me from just doing this writing class myself. And like the sagi that she is, she reminds me that nothing stops me, only me. So out of these two incidences Shut Up & Write was formed. For four Sundays, a group gathered for silent writing time over biscuits and jams and tea with a chef in the kitchen Alix Christina and whosoever will came and had what I thought felt like a Quaker meeting for writers at that beautiful home built by Quakers in the 1700s. Powerful stuff. Wrote a good portion of my memoir under the gaze of our collective muse. This photo was taken on the last day. Pip Haxby-Thompson reminded me of it this morning. Everything unfolds in perfect order. I can’t make these miracles up. There more of them than I could ever share. But I write about as many of them as I possibly can in my memoir, Shut Up & Read. Comes out next March if the creek dont rise. Stay tuned! 🙏🏾

What is the purpose of these stores? Because it can’t just be selling books. We are a community hub. A secular sanctuary. A place where you can really reckon with your own stuff. phillymag.com/news/2021/07/3…
