Icelandic whaling has long been a hot potato. It involves anything from science to business to geopolitics. It's been the subject of much int'l furor but for Icelanders it seems to be mostly about ethics and a sense of sovereignty.

Fourteen years ago, I took a deep dive in a bid to disentangle the controversy. I pored through reports, crunched some numbers and talked to academics, activists, government officials and a whale watching tour operator. I even visited a whale meat factory. It was truly educating.
