I once dated the most intelligent, most beautiful girl I'd ever met.
8 months. Everyone wanted her. I had already picked names for our children.
Then one day, casually, like she was telling me the weather, she said:
"I can't marry anyone who isn't Jehovah's Witness."
I am a Catholic.
I sat with that information for a while. Looked at her. Looked at the future I had planned. Looked at the names I had already chosen for our children.
Then I looked at myself, carrying handbag and umbrella on the street every Saturday. Forever. For love.
I didn't argue. I didn't beg. I just let it die quietly.

Remember the girl I told you guys about?
Turns out, we almost never heard that story.
She kept everything quiet. The man. The money. All of it.
She got pregnant for him and he is denying it. That's what exposed everything.
He is currently denying everything. The pregnancy. The money. All of it.
That's how the 300k story came out. She was protecting a man...who is currently pretending she doesn't exist.
Her mechanic father's money. Gone. For a man who claims he doesn't know her anymore.

So I heard something in my street today. This girl, 21 years old. Just started year 2. Her mechanic father is the one training her in school, paying for everything. Food. Clothes. Rent. Everything. In Febuary, he called her. Sent 300k for school fees. "Go and register." She registered nothing. Weeks passed. Semester was moving. Her mates were in class. She was also in class. Unregistered. Then the gist landed. The 300k? She gave it to her guy. A married man. With three children and a Wife at home. And her reason? "He's going through hard times. He needed to pay his children's school fees. And that he'll pay you back." Her father's money. Paid another man's children's school fees. While her own school fees unpaid. I heard this and just stared. No words came. Nothing funny about it. Nothing to say. Someone should explain her foolishness to me. Because her father is a mechanic

Halfway there, her ride was stopped at a police checkpoint. “Everybody come down.” They started checking phones, asking questions, delaying them for no clear reason. She kept pleading, even showed them the missed calls, her shaking hands, everything. They told her to calm down. By the time she finally got to the hospital, the atmosphere had already changed. She didn’t get to say goodbye. To the police officers, it was just another stop. But for her, it became a moment she can never undo.

I had a friend who always “needed help.”
Not the loud, dramatic type.
Just small things.
“Bro, can you send me 10k? I’ll return it tomorrow.”
“Please cover for me, I’m running late.”
“Abeg, I need your hotspot real quick.”
Nothing crazy.
And I always showed up.
No questions. No stress.
Because in my head, that’s what friendship is.
Consistency.
Over time, it became normal.

It started sounding like instructions.

“I’m coming to your place.”
“Turn on your hotspot.”
I noticed it.
But I ignored it.
Because I didn’t want to make it a “big deal.”
One day, I was tight.

But uncomfortable enough to say no.
He asked for money again.
I said, “I can’t right now.”

No insult. No attitude.

The reply?

The money I’ve spent this week alone for chop chop is too much.
I’m even starting to feel like I’m spending more than I make.
So this morning when I got to my warehouse, I told myself,
“I won’t order anything today.”
I ate the porridge yam my wife prepared for me.
Calmly. Respectfully.
I was being disciplined.
I even downloaded one budgeting app.
Linked it to my phone to track expenses.
Everything was categorized.
I said, “Yes. This is growth.”
This evening, on my way home...
I don’t even know what made me roll down my window to greet that woman.
That was how aboki suya smell entered my car
and refused to leave.
I tried to be strong.
I told myself, “Just buy small.
Not enough to exceed budget.”
I parked.
Bought ram.
Bought chicken.
As if that was not enough, I walked to the next shop,
ordered two smoothies to wash it down.
Now I’m trying to make payment...
Bank app said no.
Budget app is telling me I’ve exceeded my limit.
For my own money?????
So I can’t reward myself after a good day at work?????
I just stood there.
That was how I deleted the budgeting app.
Because why is it judging me like my village people?

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.
The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.
