In the face of brutal oppression (slavery, jim crow, the lynching tree, segregation) the Black church has consistently clung to the love of Christ rather than the hatred of its oppressors. This love ethic has made it one of the greatest voices for justice and freedom in our world

“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you. They are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor. They don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct. Unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy. Unlike orphans hey don’t need money, education, or childcare. Unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike. They allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships. And when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn. - David Barnhart

I grew up in white evangelicalism. They taught me that: - we’re all equal in Christ - anyone is welcome at church - we should uplift the oppressed - every religion deserves freedom - the words of Jesus must be taken seriously But when I planted a church centered on these values, white evangelicals called us woke liberals, claimed we weren’t real Christians, and kicked our church out of their denominations and networks.

One of the biggest ways we Christians communicate that we aren’t interested in following Jesus is when we allow a politician to convince us to fear, despise, and demonize our neighbors rather than love them.

It’s heartbreaking when the death toll of Palestinians—especially children and women—is minimized because the numbers are supposedly inflated. I mean, how many “legitimate” reports of deaths are required before compassion is given towards those who suffer?

Even in a country that calls itself Christian, true Christianity still stands out.
