Scientists retrieved the longest sediment core yet from beneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, aiming to understand its past changes and how it may respond to future warming

A new world record! 🏆 ❄️ A record-breaking Antarctic sediment core has been extracted by researchers at Imperial's Department of Earth Science and Engineering as part of a global collaboration. 🔨 The 228 metres of ancient rock and mud was drilled from under more than half a kilometre of ice, then extracted from the sea floor. 🌍 The sediment core holds an archive of past environmental conditions from warmer periods in Earth’s history. 🌡️ This can be vital information for climate scientists to determine how much and how fast the ice sheet will melt in the future under our warming climate. 📈 The core, retrieved by the Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to 2°C (SWAIS2C) project, will now be further analysed by experts. 🎥 On-site footage courtesy of Ana Tovey, SWAIS2C.
