📜Historical Profile of the Day📜 • Khosrow II • Khosrow II was the last great king of the Sassanid Persian Empire, ruling from 590 to 628 AD. He came to power during a time of civil unrest, briefly ousted before regaining the throne with military help from the Byzantine emperor Maurice. Ironically, Maurice's later assassination by Phocas gave Kosrow the Casus Belli to attack the Byzantine Empire and nearly destroy the Empire. Claiming to avenge his ally, Khosrow launched a massive war against Byzantium. Under his command, Persian armies captured Byzantine Mesopotamia, swept through Syria, seized Jerusalem in 614, and carried off the True Cross. They advanced into Egypt, taking Alexandria by 619, and extended control over the entire Nile Valley. His forces even pushed into Anatolia and laid siege to Constantinople in coordination with the Avars—an unprecedented moment in Sassanid history. When the war turned against Kosrow, He was overthrown by Persian nobles as well as his own son, Kavadh II, and executed in 628. Khosrow II’s reign marked both the zenith and the downfall of the Sassanid Empire. His wars with Byzantium drained both empires, leaving them vulnerable to the sudden rise of Arab Muslim forces just a few years later. His life remains a powerful symbol of glory, revenge, and the fatal cost of imperial overreach.

📜Historical Profile of the Day📜 • Phocas • Phocas was a Byzantine emperor from AD 602 to 610, whose reign is often remembered as one of brutality, instability, and internal decline. A centurion of humble Thracian origins, Phocas rose to power amid mutiny in the army, leading a revolt that overthrew and executed Emperor Maurice—an act that shocked the empire and earned him the throne but also the enmity of many. Lacking administrative skill and ruling through fear, Phocas quickly alienated the Senate, the military elite, and the church. His reign was marked by purges of potential rivals and widespread paranoia. Meanwhile, the empire’s enemies seized the opportunity. The Sassanid Persians, under Khosrow II—claiming to avenge Maurice—launched a devastating war that overran much of the eastern provinces. The Balkans too saw increasing incursions by Avars and Slavs. Opposition to Phocas eventually coalesced around Heraclius, the Exarch of Africa, whose forces sailed to Constantinople in AD 610. Phocas was captured, tortured, and executed—his downfall as violent as his rise. Though often vilified in historical sources, Phocas represents the turmoil of a crumbling imperial system, where the army could make emperors, and survival was fleeting. His reign marked a turning point that led the empire toward both crisis and eventual transformation.

@nullpointered Easy, Belgium refuses to continue it in their own country thus allowing the Germans to simply go around it.
