@ph7litmus @mindofprospect Isn't this how you end up with American style student loans that *never* leave you? National commercial loans to 18 year olds doesn't sound great

@mindofprospect Agreed. But more might lend if assured the loan wouldn’t be written off on bankruptcy (as is true of government student loans), so maybe that should be a thing? No point refinancing the loan if on an average income tbh as the repayments are low until you earn more.

Also, why does nobody ever do the maths and realise this adds up to over £100k paid back, why are we paying back £108k on a £27k loan? The government are loan sharks

Between The Worst Person in the World and Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier has to be my favourite working director this decade. Both completely original masterpieces that emotionally floor you and linger in your thoughts long after watching them. Incredible visuals, nuanced acting and clever but profound writing. They have it all.

Stupid, niche, meaningless Letterboxd question for my fellow ranked list makers: Once you enter into a new year, aka 2026, are you still adding 2025 releases you see now into your 2025 Ranked lists? Or do you let that thing freeze in time December 31st, 2025

For a number of different reasons, I do not understand why more filmmakers and showrunners do not take the Lynch route of “I’m not answering that, watch what I made.”

@truereddevil99 @letterboxd Yes to your first question. Some people try to put on every movie they've watched. Even if you watch it again, you can later at a date to it. If it's on a list, it'll stay there. You can set your filter to fade watched films though.

@letterboxd does this mean i can add a film i watched before i started using Letterboxd if i don’t know the date and i know i wont watch it ever again but want to record it? Plus if i watch it and its on say a list will it knock it off that list?

@JustineBateman Amen sister. Used to love going to the movies with my family, but it became unaffordable and the movie quality has gone in the toilet. I don't really care about Hulk 8 or Super whatever 23. Where did the original subjects and quality film making go?

This is what’s going on. You can’t put “second-screen” visual muzak in a theater, because it is purposefully designed to NOT hold your attention. An actual film MUST hold your attention for 90-120 minutes. But when the financial endgame of a film is a sale to a streamer, the streamers’ needs for second-screen “content” will be catered to. It’s wallpaper. It’s a waste of time. Watch any film from the 90’s and beyond. You’ll be shocked at how tight even the most low-brow films were. That’s because they were made with the audience in mind, and not streaming executives.
HD MOVIE SOURCE@HDMOVIESOURCE

The truth is when movies are bad, people watch them at home. That’s the real reason audiences stay away from theaters. If the films aren’t worth the trip, they get treated like background noise on Netflix instead of an event on the big screen. Watching at home is just a reflection of that. Strong movies make the format matter, weak ones don’t. When a film has real weight, you want the theater. When it doesn’t, you settle for the couch.
