Nobody warns you how much of childcare is just bending and lifting increasingly large weights at awkward angles.

Some people treat doctors like they're psychics: "Why am I describing my symptoms to you? You're the professional. You tell me what's wrong." People don't even know what medication they're taking or what it does: "Not my business - the doctor should know."

The sun came out this week and I instinctively filled the shopping basket with fruit. Maybe the time of soup is over.

@Aella_Girl @selentelechia Haha, same! I loved the regency period so I got into Cornwall's Sharpe novels and now I know that you should always form square in the face of cavalry.

I got much more interested in war after going through the history of rome, where I got invested in the general plot, and then it was like 'oh shit is this guy I like with this army actually gonna be able to defeat this other guy" and then you can look at the battle diagrams to see the choices he made etc. After that I started getting a handle for how battles work and this made them more interesting to me in general

Old alchemical texts used to include obviously false (sometimes dangerous) information to mess with unserious students. I feel like trying to use free AI is the same. Constantly verifying.

@babieswithb almost all the negative emotion from the toddler at the moment is tantrums - eg. I refuse to fetch a book for her that she can fetch herself? Would you just ignore? She seems to get over it quickly when I do - and I don't really want to validate?

normally I will validate the emotion, talk simply abt what happened, offer hug/ some physical coping strategy... all the normal things, and it resolves itself. it seems good to me in those moments that I didn't make the child ignore their sensations and feelings.

I don't have an elaborate philosophy on this and I doubt we actually reliably know the impact of anything of this sort but my personal preference is to only do this if I notice they're stuck in a loop where they keep further distressing themselves and need help getting out
Chrisman@chrisman

Raising our fourth toddler has made it incredibly obvious the way to deal with negative emotions is distraction. Oh you're crying because you hit your head? Is that a bird outside? Problem solved.

@selentelechia Could it be that you could taste the bacteria in your tonsils dying off? I once had tonsillitis and had no symptom exact a really funny taste in my throat.

@hmmmcurious What kind of tea, tho? Milky English breakfast goes so well with buttery toast, crumpets, muffins, any kind of biscuit. The only pastry that goes better with coffee is croissant.

The thing with coffee is that it pairs with almost everything; tea with almost nothing! Must stick with it till Easter

Epstein on 1 side of the pond; grooming gangs on the other. The Epstein narrative: an epic battle between good and evil; charasmatic and powerful characters; reader participation. The GG enquiry: miserable & sordid. Real & shabby. Nobody can bear to look; so little reporting.

The range of responses to the Epstein files! On one hand people harrassing every academic that replied to an email from him as a co-conspirator baby eater. On the other hand, people denying he was even a pimp as if he didn't already have a previous conviction.

At softplay with the kids, a little boy points at my mole, "What's that?" "It's a mole." He clearly wants to touch it, so I let him. "Ewwwww," he is disgusted. He gives it a good push. "It's squishy!" I belong in a Victorian human zoo.

When I feed the baby she picks at the mole on my face with her sharp little baby nails. Seriously thinking about cosmetic surgery.

@ThymeToBeBorn The author is on twitter and very friendly if you want to tag him directly? (Didn't want to do it for you). I don't think there's much more gore once you're out of ancient executions but I haven't read it for a long time so I don't really remember. There might be matyrs...

This book opens up with gratuitous detailed explanations of all kinds of tortures and execution methods from the old world. I'm on a permanent hiatus from this kind of material so can someone tell me if the whole book is like this?

My new book on Narnia is out! After a bit of a delay, "Signs Among the Stones" is on sale - it explores The Horse and His Boy and The Silver Chair, tracing literary and cultural influences, from Plato to Mark Twain to Spenser (RTs appreciated!)
