@Dingo9933 @_BH460_ its a Magnum engine, its a 70s engine with EFI and chrysler electronics. Mechanically solid engines with crap electronics. One could do a head gasket and timing job in a day. Its quite simple to do upkeep. Thats really it

@Incon_Conveyed @_BH460_ Some last. I had a customer with a 2002 Durango with 340k on it before I retired from automotive work. He was the anomaly. If it wasn’t a 318, it wasn’t built to last. Sadly the 360’s had cooling port matching issues that cause blown head gaskets if it was ever overheated once.

@HankIgitur @hotwheelsjack They may be crap but its cheaper than paying hundreds of dollars a month on leases/payments. If its mechanically totalled its not leaving under its own power. Its cheaper to fix a used car than it is to buy new nowadays.

@Incon_Conveyed @hotwheelsjack Those cars are crap - either wrecks in accidents or mechanically totaled. You’ll spend more than the original purchase price sorting them out

@Randomistic2838 @hotwheelsjack Its not that difficult to save for a few months for a $2000 car that will last a few months longer and slowly sort out any issues it has over the following few months to have a decent used car that isnt cosmetically good but mechanically solid.

@Incon_Conveyed @hotwheelsjack and lose out on dealership protection and the option to finance. This is sad that we have to resort to buying cars from random people because these decades old cars are insanely priced.

@shadetreeisback and thats the benefit of the market, you can give a counter offer of price if the vehicle is lesser than what you think. Or you can just not buy the car. Look for a better deal elsewhere. Its not that hard really

No that's not the problem here Obviously a car can have issues but you know people rarely buy cars when they have issues the problem is when you buy a car and then it develops issues mileage service history how well it's been looked after these things matter and the prices reflect that

My first car was a 1994 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9l V6 and 145k miles. It cost me $1400 in 2016.

@shadetreeisback its not a risk if you know how to look out for issues. If anything its a means to negotiate a better price. Its true people are paycheck to paycheck. Its a matter of living within ones means and working to better their own skillset. Marketable skills = more money

You likely bought that a while back when the prices were lower or you just got a really good deal. But yeah most staff you can buy on the US market at these kind of prices now is a massive risk. In most cases today a 4k car is a liability, cheap cars are cheap for a reason. And a lot of people are paycheck to paycheck these days, a surprise $1,000 repair is not something they can deal with easily.

@Incon_Conveyed @_BH460_ Riiight. Of the vehicles I work on the least, it’s Nissan, Honda and Toyota products. Chrysler products are perpetually in the shop. More than any other brand. I’ve seen several of the the same generation Armada/QX80 with over 300k with minimal issues comparatively.

@shadetreeisback I paid $4k for my current vehicle. 120k miles. Most I had to do was replace the front suspension components which was $1000. Other than that no issues other than a minor oil leak.

Yeah that was in the past the market has changed. If you're spending 3000 on a car now it's going to have things wrong with it or it's about to have things wrong with it. The best place to buy a car is above the bottom of the barrel. In today's market 7 grand gets you something that's probably going to be fairly reliable and has been well looked after three grand gets you a piece of shit that's going to end up in the shop with eye watering repair bills.

Where did the cheap cars go? Three major reasons: 1. Cash for Clunkers 2. Foreigners buying them and sending them overseas 3. Illegals buying them and driving them uninsured There's at bare minimum 50 million illegals in this country, pretty obvious if you ask me
Slumdog_Chillionaire@SlumRNA_Dog

Yeah bro I was driving a 2002 Corolla when I was in high school except that was in 2005. The fact that a car I was driving 20 years ago is going for 7k today instead of 300 dollars is INSANE

@shadetreeisback Well it seems you have had bad luck in the past it seems, Ive bought dozens of cars from there and all but one have I ever been screwed on Yet all of them have ran just fine. Most expensive repair ive had to do was a $500 computer on a $3000 car. I sold that car what I had in it

If we're talking about cars at that price point they are going to have problems you are scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel of the market. That is a terrible place to buy because that thing is going to need work, you are going to spend more money purchasing and then repairing that vehicle than if you went higher up in the market. It's a complete false economy like yes you can buy vehicles for that little but these are not vehicles that are in good condition.

An oil change is a terrible example because you need $30 of tools from harbor freight and the fifty square feet you already park in
