5th May 1916 - The Martyrdom of Major John MacBride On this day, John MacBride, soldier of Ireland and veteran of the struggle against Empire, was taken from his cell in Kilmainham and brought before the rifles of the enemy. Born in Mayo, he carried the cause of Irish freedom beyond Ireland's shores, standing with the Boers against the British Empire in South Africa before taking his place among the soldiers of the Republic in Easter Week. Though not among the planners of the Rising, he did not stand aside when Ireland called. He served under Thomas MacDonagh and met death as he had met life. An Irish soldier, an enemy of British imperialism and a servant of the Republic. In shooting John MacBride, England added another name to the roll of Ireland's immortal dead. His grave in Arbour Hill is not a monument to defeat but an altar of Irish freedom.
