What do these things have in common?
Earthquakes🏚️
Volcanic eruptions🌋
Submarine landslides🌊
Coastal rock falls🪨
Large meteorites☄️
They can all cause a #Tsunami!
Knowing Tsunami hazards can save your life!

Background seismic noise is everywhere. Ocean waves generate microseisms. Strong wind and storms are detectable by seismic sensors. Anthropogenic activities, changes in temperature, and even magnetic field variations produce detectable disturbances (1/n)

A study in @Nature reports that the newly discovered Perucetus colossus, an ancient species of whale, is thought to be one of the largest and heaviest animals on record. Estimates of its size and weight, based on a partial skeleton, rival the blue whale. go.nature.com/3KqwznX

The number of aftershocks located by @DepremDairesi
(#AFAD) reaches 3800. But as their average magnitude keeps on decreasing, it is now possible to detect down to magnitude 1.0 events.

Altought faults are conventionally modelled as discontinuity of zero thickness, this example from Kahramanmaraş shows that #earthquakes do not occur on infinitely thin faults, but consist of complex evolving networks with one (or more) fault core.
