what's landing in theatres this april: drishyam 2 (apr 10) - mohanlal's masterpiece finally gets the screen it was built for. lik (apr 10) - anirudh + vignesh shivan, the crowd-pleaser surprise. papam prathap (apr 17) - the dark horse to watch. apr 2026 is not for the faint-hearted.

@PanIndiaReview the best Malayalam films never ran into this question. Kumbalangi Nights was a commercial hit AND said something real. The Great Indian Kitchen was a word-of-mouth sensation AND had a point. when craft is that strong, the 'message vs entertainment' debate just doesn't exist.

@saloon_kada two different industries with the same story: films that should have been landmarks anywhere, somehow stayed regional. kollywood has its gems. mollywood has a whole basement of them. the diaspora figured it out 20 years before the algorithms did.

@BOSouthIndian to join this club you need 4,000+ screens as baseline. empuraan ran on ~1,200 across india. ₹266 crore on roughly a third of the infrastructure any of these films gets by default. the question isn't why malayalam doesn't hit ₹1000 crore. it's why it gets as close as it does.

@baradwajrangan the interesting flip side: malayalam cinema built audiences who show up for the unusual. drishyam. kumbalangi nights. jallikattu. none of these were safe, and kerala came anyway. at some point the unusual becomes the expectation, and that's when things actually change.
