@IndianaReview what exactly happens to authors that don’t obey this rule?

Friends, a reminder: When you simultaneously submit your work to multiple publications, it's etiquette to publish with the first journal to accept. We suggest not submitting to "DREAM JOURNAL" and "JOURNAL I DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT" at the same time!

@CoffeeandIrony @effthealgorithm Personally speaking, I've worked at lit mags in various capacities for almost 20 years, and I've never heard of a journal keeping a 'maybe' list. I also think it would be helpful for everyone if writers only submitted to journals they'd be excited to appear in.

@CoffeeandIrony If you submit to DREAM and NOT-DREAM at the same time and NOT-DREAM says "yes," remember NOT-DREAM is simultaneously saying "no" to writers who consider them DREAM. Withdrawing a piece after it's been accepted ultimately takes chances away from other writers.

I would've strongly agreed with this 5 years ago but the publishing space has changed so dramatically since Covid - it's infinitely more competitive and cutthroat. Most of us now only get ONE change to publish in a real dream journal - you have to get the right piece, at the right time, when there's space and it hits the editor's mood - so because of how widely we have to submit, and pay for submissions, I actually don't think it's a good standard anymore to expect writers not to withdraw works if they're accepted to a dream journal

Friends, we hit our fiction cap and have unfortunately had to close early for short story submissions. We're open for poetry and nonfiction through the end of the month!
