Jamaica's Oil and Gas Future: A High-Stakes Gamble in Deep Waters 1/3 KINGSTON, #Jamaica — Off the southern coast of this sun-drenched island nation, in the vast expanse of the Walton-Morant Basin, a small British exploration company is quietly pursuing what could become one of the Caribbean's most consequential energy stories in decades. United Oil & Gas Plc, a modest London-listed firm, holds 100 percent of a 22,400-square-kilometer offshore license where independent assessments point to unrisked mean prospective resources of more than 7 billion barrels of oil equivalent — a figure that, if even partially realized, could reshape Jamaica's economy. As of late January 2026, the drama is entering a critical new act. The research vessel R/V Gyre, operated by the Texas-based marine geoscience firm TDI-Brooks International, mobilized from Trinidad on Jan. 17 and is now en route to Jamaican waters. After pre-survey inspections in Kingston, expected around Jan. 27, the ship will begin a carefully planned geochemical campaign: multibeam echo sounder mapping of the seabed, heat-flow measurements and, most importantly, piston coring to extract sediment samples from dozens of targeted sites. These cores are not random grabs. Scientists will focus on seafloor pockmarks and depressions — telltale signs of possible hydrocarbon seepage — some stretching hundreds of meters across. Laboratory analysis in the United States will hunt for thermogenic hydrocarbons, the chemical fingerprints of an active petroleum system. Preliminary findings could arrive within one to two months of fieldwork's end, with final results targeted for mid-2026. A positive outcome would provide direct, physical evidence that oil or gas is migrating upward from deep reservoirs, dramatically lowering the geological risk for what has so far remained a promising but unproven frontier. United Oil & Gas acquired the license years ago and has invested tens of millions in seismic data and studies. The block benefits from extensive prior coverage, including thousands of square kilometers of 3D seismic that have already outlined more than 20 individual prospects and leads, some carrying billion-barrel potential. Yet no exploratory well has been drilled. The company, which lacks the balance sheet to shoulder a $30 million-plus deepwater well alone, is actively seeking farm-in partners — major or mid-tier operators willing to fund drilling in exchange for equity.
