@InfinityArk There always will be the problem that grifters like that guy will do the "The cartoon character agrees with my braindead opinions!" routine to get backpats from politics addicts.

I know this is a strange concept for people but as a creator your characters should have their own opinions, thoughts, and ideas that are different from your own. They are your characters they aren't you. I'm not looking forward to the discourse about me when Roa comes out.😅

Indeed I believe they tend to be destructive as well especially if you insert them into a universe you didn't make. Even if you don't it tends to drag the entire rest of the work down in order to prop up that one character. Rarely will you find a self insert that isn't above the rest of the cast in value.

Back in writing school I remember being taught "Don't write your characters as yourself you are boring no one wants to read that" It stuck with me to this day. A character is just a character if you cannot write a character different from yourself I don't think you're a very good writer personally.

Thanks I'm not a fan of this whole idea that an author only writes themselves into their works. If they are a good author they don't have these issues they can write any type of character. Shirow is of course quite a good author and it would be no issue for him to write characters very different from himself.

Any decent writer knows that one of the reasons you don't do that is because people can tell. It's especially noticeable if you do it with someone else's character tho which is primarily how that happens. Character suddenly changes into a drastically different person? The writer is likely writing themselves over it.

I concur; & far too many western characters, even those that weren't originally, are now writer self inserts.

Cool! I can draw pretty well myself but I don't have the speed that Tito does and I can't animate traditionally as well as he can. I think it's a good idea to play to your strengths and get others to fill in the gaps. Tito has some issues with intricate details that Tedbob is very good at for example. We all compliment each other.

With me it would be rather crazy to assume my characters opinions match up. I'd be alot of things and also nothing. Silly to me. Not the way I was taught either. Like I said on another post if you can't write characters that aren't you then you really aren't much of a writer.

@InfinityArk You have to write characters whose beliefs differ from yours cause' if you don't, there's no potential for the conflict that's essential for storytelling, that's why it's BS when some1 claims all the characters opinions're the authors'; it might be true for 1 or 2, but not all.

If your trying to figure out how I feel about certain topics based on my characters please don't. All of my characters have their own concepts, ideas and individual interests. They vary wildly. Maybe this is an old school way of writing but I don't write characters based on my own ideals. I write them based on THEIR ideals.

I’m still pretty new to the DOA scene, but this loss hurts. Wakana Yamazaki (Ayane’s VA) was also behind another favorite character of mine, so her work has been part of my life longer than I even realized. It reminded me how deeply VA’s shape the characters we connect with.
