A Story by F O D. Season Fourteen. Title: Birthday Behind Bars. Episode One. My name is F O D. And today is my birthday. And I want to say a Big Thanks to God for keeping me Alive. Lagos woke up hungry, angry, sweating diesel smoke and frustration through every broken road and danfo conductor insult. Somewhere inside a cramped apartment lit by the pale glow of a dying ring light, I sat alone on the edge of my bed refreshing my phone like a desperate gambler waiting for destiny to blink. 11:47 AM. No calls. No family messages. No “Happy Birthday F O D.” Nothing. Only strangers. Random fans from Facebook. Some girl from Port Harcourt. Three loyal followers from “A Story By F O D” fan page. One Ghanaian woman calling me “an African voice.” But the people I loved? Silent. Even Wura, the LOML... Especially Wura. My girlfriend "Wura" had posted food online that morning. She posted selfies. She reposted celebrity gossip. But nothing about me on her tl. I laughed bitterly. That dangerous kind of laugh Lagos teaches men when pain becomes entertainment. Outside, thunder rolled over the city skies. And my chest was collapsing quietly. Two days earlier, on May 23rd. I had reached out to Genesis Motherless Babies Home in Ogun State. I wanted meaning. Something deeper than clubs, alcohol and fake birthday love. The orphanage accepted happily. On May 24th, myself and my media team traveled to inspect the place before the celebration. That was when hell introduced itself. The road. Jesus Christ. The road looked like a punishment. Mud swallowed tires. Floodwater buried potholes. Commercial bikes overturned. Children trekked barefoot through dirty water. Pregnant women struggled like war refugees. Then our vehicle got stuck. For over three hours. Mosquitoes. Rain. Anger. Silence. And somewhere inside that frustration, the F O D in me snapped. I stepped out into the rain. Turned on my camera. And delivered the video that would either make or mare my life. “This is not governance. This is wickedness.” My voice shook with rage. “You people loot money while citizens suffer like abandoned animals!” I posted the video on X and it spread like wildfire across all social media platforms within hours: “WHO IS F O D?” “THE MAN WHO EXPOSED OGUN STATE.” “VOICE OF THE STREETS.” The governor’s supporters attacked me immediately with different narratives, but ordinary Nigerians? They worshipped me overnight. By Monday morning, my face was everywhere. And by 1:16 PM… A knock came on my door. BAM. BAM. BAM. I opened the door. Men entered. Plain clothes. Hard faces. No smiles. One flashed an ID. “Mr. F O D?” “Yes.” “You are under arrest for cyberbullying, defamation, incitement and spreading false information against the Ogun State government. I'll advise you remain silent because whatever you say will be used against you in the law court.” They handcuffed me and as we walked out of my apartment, camera flashes from outside. Neighbors recording. And somewhere in Lagos… Wura screamed as she watched the breaking news on TV. “POPULAR ONLINE STORYTELLER F O D ARRESTED.” The surprise birthday party decorations froze in everybody’s hands. Writers protested. One tweet got over 2 million views: “If telling the truth is now a crime, then every Nigerian is guilty.” And inside a dark detention room… On my birthday… I smiled slowly.
