This land was named “Palestine” by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago, after crushing a Jewish revolt, as an attempt to erase Jewish identity and invoke the memory of the long defeated Philistines.
For centuries, the region was ruled by the Ottomans and later the British. There was never an independent Arab state here called Palestine.
Golda Meir put it plainly:
“East and West Bank was Palestine. I’m a Palestinian. From ’21 to ’48 I carried a Palestinian passport. There was no such thing here as Jews, Arabs and Palestinians. There were Jews and Arabs.”

There are no 'Palestinians' in the ethnic sense of the word. They are Arabs. Gazan Arabs and West Bank Arabs. The so-called 'Palestinian ethnic identity' has nothing to do with the centuries-long evolutionary ethnic processes which resulted in the natural forming of other nations in the Middle East. Fixated on an illusory ancient identity (ancient Philistines) the fundamental logic of this identity construction is fallacious.
Issued by the High Commissioner for Palestine to residents of the territory between 1924 and 1948, "Palestinian passports" were travel documents issued by British authorities in Mandatory Palestine. Titled "British passport, Palestine," these were issued to residents—Jews, Muslims, and Christians—who were considered British-protected persons, not British citizens. These passports ceased to be valid on May 15, 1948.
The passport cover was brown, often with "British Passport" printed at the top and "Palestine" below.
Holders included Jews, Christians, and Muslims, with 70,000 documents issued between 1926 and 1935. They had the right of abode (residence) but were technically considered "British protected persons."
All such documents became invalid with the termination of the British mandate on 15 May 1948.
