I’ve met a number of businesses obtaining high scores from Innovate UK applications, repeatedly, but never receiving funding. It disincentives good, innovative companies from applying. Apart from increasing budgets (which is required) here are some ideas that could help (THREAD)

@pittso It just seems a really odd timeframe, especially for a business application - I imagine things will have changed dramatically within 11 months of applying. I'll check with UKRI central

@InnovateJon Not sure of the details Jon but could be about budget timings. Everything is tight right now.

UKRI Future Leader Fellowships Rd 9 competition closes in Jun 2024 but interview panels are not until May 2025, applicants notified June 2025! No wonder the scope of the competition requires projects to react to changing external environments!

Innovate does not receive enough funding - that's the underlying problem. But I can't help but feel different assessment approaches are needed - I know companies that consistently score 80, across multiple competitions, and are consistently unsuccessful

A worked example: in Smart there are 6 scored questions (each out of 10). If assessor 1 scores 10 across the board, assessor 2 scores 8 across the board and assessor 3 scores 8 in 4 questions and 7 in the other 2, the applicant is unsuccessful in this case.

Innovate has to do something about the assessment process for its competitions. The September Smart call was, as always, oversubscribed. For projects >18 months the lowest scoring funded application scored 86.1%. What does that mean in practice?
