That’s actually what made the ending hit harder for me. The director wasn’t trying to give viewers the usual “evil punished, everyone healed” type of closure because that wasn’t the reality of the actual case. What happened in the Hwaseong murders left permanent scars on innocent people, especially the man who was falsely imprisoned for 20 years and the families who never truly got justice. So instead of turning it into a satisfying revenge story, the drama chose to stay honest to that lingering pain and frustration. I also respect that the director refused to change the ending just to make it more crowd pleasing. His point about “Should the villain suddenly get struck by lightning?” really shows he wanted the story to reflect the unfairness of real life rather than force a fake sense of closure.

Endingnya dinilai kurang memuaskan, sutradara #TheScarecrow bilang kalau mereka emang sengaja gak bikin ending yang melegakan atau penuh balas dendam manis ala drama kriminal pada umumnya. Karena in real casenya, korban pun gak bener bener mendapat keadilan. Pelaku dan orang orang yang terlibat banyak yang gak dihukum dengan layak, jadi menurut mereka gak masuk akal kalau dramanya tiba tiba kasih ending super memuaskan cuma demi penonton. Drama ini sendiri terinspirasi dari kasus pembunuhan berantai Hwaseong. Sutradaranya pernah bertemu langsung dengan korban salah tuduh yang dipaksa ngaku sampai dipenjara 20 tahun, juga keluarga korban pembunuhan asli. Setelah ketemu mereka, dia memutuskan bikin drama yang fokus ke luka dan hidup orang orang yang ditinggalkan tragedi itu, bukan sekadar cari sensasi siapa pelakunya. Makanya di The Scarecrow, rasa sesak dan frustrasinya sengaja dipertahankan sampai akhir. Bahkan awalnya pihak studio dan stasiun TV sempat request minta ending yang lebih sat-set memuaskan, tapi sutradaranya nolak. Dia bilang, "Masa iya penjahatnya tiba-tiba mati kesambar petir atau kecelakaan?"

A friend of mine was not allowed to name her first child because they don’t want her tribe name. Her husband single handedly picked the English name, the mother-in-law picked Igbo name and she wanted to pick an uhrobo name as she was urhobo but was told she cannot because they don’t want the child to bear an urhobo name . She insisted on picking an English name but was told the child cannot have two English names. That was how she never got to name a child she carried and birthed.
